About ATCN Course
The Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) Course teaches well-established treatment methods and approaches trauma care in a systematic manner, presenting to the nurse a concise method of establishing assessment and management priorities in the care of the trauma patient.
The program, taught concurrently with approved Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Course by ATLS physician instructors includes lectures on initial assessment, airway management, abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma, shock, head and spinal cord trauma, burns, extremity trauma, pediatric trauma, trauma in pregnancy, and stabilization and transportation.
Nursing practical skills stations and moulage assessment stations are conducted by ATCN instructors for integration and application of didactic information.
This course includes an educational, collaborative, synchronized team approach to trauma care with the participants of ATLS Course. Doctors and nurses caring for trauma patients have the opportunity to share a common language and approach to trauma care.
The ATCN Course provides the participant with basic knowledge necessary to:
- Assess the patient's condition rapidly and accurately
- Resuscitate and stabilize the patient according to priority
- Determine if the patient's needs exceed a facility's capabilities
- Arrange appropriate definitive care for patients
